March 8, 2008

On March 8, Saturday eleven brave courageous hikers faced the bitter cold to hike on the Conecuh Trail to Blue Springs .  We met at Open Pond Recreation Area and stepped out  of our warm cars to a cold wind blowing across the lake making the 38 degree temperature feel like 28 instead.  Peggy Grantham led the warmly dressed group from the sweep position and only got lost a couple times.  The hikers were; Wallis Mayo, Amy Snyder, Mary Marcionx, Pam Smith, O’Flynn, Christine Hale, Suzie the Black Lab,  Cindy Lawson, Lore Conway, Melissa Rohrer and Susan Chase.  When we got to a point on the trail near the Five Runs Creek which was very high we found the bridge down and only an old log to walk on to get across and surging flow of water.  We debated what to do and decided to bush whack our way though the underbrush, making a new trail skirting the flooded area.  We finally found the springs, very unspring like due to the high water level, and had our lunch.  By them we were all shedding layers of clothing.  The trip back was less exciting though some of us got to watch the road crew while they worked on installing a culvert under the road.
