The Florida National Scenic Trail on Eglin AFB

Caution:  The sketches of the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST) on the Eglin AFB Reservation are provided to give the viewer a thumbnail representation of the FNST route and location.  They are not intended for use as navigational maps. These sketches do not reflect all roads or terrain features.  Periodically, trail route adjustments and reroutes are necessary due to blow downs and other factors.  Trail users should always follow the FNST orange blazes.  Temporary reroutes are normally flagged with orange surveyors tape.  Trail users may encounter downed trees that temporarily block the trail.  Trail and bridges are designed for hiker foot traffic only.  Use of wheel vehicles and horses are prohibited and will degrade and erode the treadway.

Maps:  Detailed hiker oriented maps for Eglin are available from the Florida Trail Association (FTA) at www.floridatrail.org or 1-877-HIKEFLA (FTA map 2, 3 and 4).  The Eglin Recreation Map also reflects the FNST route on the Reservation.  However, the Eglin map is not as detailed as the FTA maps, and does not show the six backcountry primitive campsites that are accessible only by foot.  The Eglin map is available from the Eglin Natural Resources Branch, 107 Hwy 85 North, Niceville, FL 32578; (850) 882-4164.

Eglin Permit and Registration Requirements: Eglin requires that all hikers have an Eglin Recreation Permit and complete a  Hiker Registration Card.  All
trail users age 16 or older are required to have a current  Eglin Recreation Permit (Oct 1 – Sept 30) in  their possession.   This permit costs $7. and can be
purchased at the Eglin  Natural Resources Branch, 107  Hwy 85  North, Niceville, FL 32578;  (850) 882-4164.  Camping is authorized only at designated
campsites  with  the  purchase of  a  $5 Camping  Permit ( covers  up to ten  campers for  five days ).   Hiker  Registration  Cards are available  at  each
Trailhead/kiosk.   A new HikerRegistration Card must be completed at each Trailhead/kiosk (US331, Alaqua, SR285 and SR85) as the hiker proceeds east
  or west across Eglin.
