WEB SITE HOME
This
is the home page of Western Gate's and Choctawhatchee's web site. Both
organizations are Chapters of the Florida Trail Association, and are devoted to
building, maintaining and hiking the Florida National Scenic Trail, which
stretches more that 1300 miles from Fort Pickens in Escambia County to the Big
Cyprus Swamp in south Florida. Western Gate is responsible for trails in
Florida Counties of Escambia and Santa Rosa, while Choctawhatchee has trails in
Okaloosa and Walton Counties. In total there are approximately 200 miles of
trail in the four county area, much of it continuous, which makes multi-day
backpacking trips feasible. Trails are connected on the east to those of
the Panhandle Chapter of the Florida Trail Association, and to the north to the
trails of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society through the Conecuh National Forest.
Both Chapters regularly lead hikes, campouts, backpacks,
canoe trips and bike excursions. Hikes are tailored to the capability of a
variety of individuals, from a one hour walk around town with dinner to follow
to a twenty mile cross country event.
Monthly meetings are held by both Chapters.
